Middle Course Landforms (Oxbow Lakes)

Formation of Oxbow Lakes

Oxbow lakes form in the middle course of a river where meanders are common. The process begins when the neck of a meander 6the narrow strip of land between two bends 6becomes very thin due to continuous erosion and deposition.

On the outer bends of meanders, the river erodes the bank laterally, making the bends more pronounced. On the inner bends, deposition of sediment occurs, narrowing the neck further. During a flood, the river may cut through this narrow neck, creating a new, straighter channel.

The old meander loop is cut off from the main river flow and becomes an isolated, curved water body called an oxbow lake. Over time, sediment is deposited at the entrances of the cut-off meander, sealing it off completely from the river.

This process changes the river 27s course and creates a distinctive U-shaped lake beside the river channel.

For instance, if a river meander neck is 50 metres wide and erosion narrows it by 5 metres each year, it will take 10 years for the neck to be breached, assuming steady erosion and deposition rates.

Characteristics of Oxbow Lakes

  • Oxbow lakes are U-shaped or crescent-shaped bodies of water.
  • They are found in the middle course of rivers, where meanders are well developed.
  • These lakes lie within the floodplain, the flat area surrounding the river channel.
  • The water in oxbow lakes is usually shallow and stagnant because it is cut off from the river 27s flow.
  • Over time, oxbow lakes may fill with sediment and vegetation, becoming marshy or disappearing altogether.

Processes Involved

Lateral erosion occurs on the outer bends of meanders where the river 27s current is fastest. This erodes the riverbank sideways, making the bends more exaggerated.

Deposition happens on the inner bends where the flow is slower, causing sediment to settle and build up, narrowing the meander neck.

During flood events, the river 27s energy increases, allowing it to cut through the narrow neck, creating a new, straighter channel. This is called a meander cutoff.

Sediment carried by the river is then deposited at the entrances of the abandoned meander loop, sealing it off from the main river and forming the oxbow lake.

For example, if a flood causes the river to cut through a neck 30 metres wide, and the river deposits sediment at a rate of 2 metres per month at the entrances, it will take about 15 months to fully seal off the old channel.

Importance and Impact

  • Habitat for wildlife: Oxbow lakes provide a unique wetland environment supporting diverse plants, insects, birds, and aquatic animals.
  • Indicator of river maturity: Their presence shows the river is mature and actively changing course in its middle course section.
  • Changes in river course: Oxbow lakes mark where the river has shifted, which can affect nearby land use and ecosystems.
  • Wetland development: Over time, oxbow lakes may develop into marshes or swamps, important for biodiversity and floodwater storage.
PracticeExample 2

Worked Example

Example: A river meander neck is 40 metres wide. During a flood, the river cuts through the neck, creating a new channel. Sediment is deposited at a rate of 4 metres per month at each entrance of the old meander. How long will it take for the oxbow lake to be fully sealed off?

PracticeExample 3

Worked Example

Example: Explain why oxbow lakes are found in the middle course of a river rather than the upper or lower course.

PracticeExample 4

Worked Example

Example: Describe the changes in river processes that lead to the formation of an oxbow lake.

  • Remember that oxbow lakes form when a meander is cut off, creating a U-shaped lake.
  • Think of lateral erosion as the river 3wearing away 4 the outer bend and deposition as the river 3dropping 4 sediment on the inner bend.
  • Flood events speed up the process by allowing the river to break through the narrow neck.
