Algebra: Adding and Subtraction

Algebra : A Close Look at Adding and Subtracting terms

Algebra is just a way to represent things with letters. This allows us to then do complex math and calculations with those "things".

In algebra, adding and subtracting terms can be like putting similar objects together or taking them away. Think of terms as "like items" in your math toolbox. We’ll learn how to add and subtract them step by step, and you’ll see it’s just a matter of identifying the parts that match

Understanding Algebraic Terms

An algebraic term is a number, a variable (like xx or yy), or a combination of both. Here’s what makes them different:

  • Constant: A plain number (like 55 or 3-3).
  • Variable: A symbol that represents an unknown number (like xx or yy).
  • Coefficient: The number that is multiplied by the variable (like the 44 in 4x4x).

Like Terms vs. Unlike Terms

  • Like Terms: Terms that have the same variable part. For example, 2x2x and 5x5x are like terms, but 3x3x and 4y4y are not.
  • Unlike Terms: Terms that have different variables or powers. For example, 3x3x and 4y4y are unlike terms, as are 2x2x and x2x^2.

To add or subtract algebraic terms, we only combine like terms.

Steps to Add and Subtract Algebraic Terms

  1. Identify like terms: Find terms that have the same variable part.
  2. Add or subtract the coefficients: Keep the variable part the same, and add or subtract the numbers in front.
  3. Combine: Write the simplified expression.

Tips for Adding and Subtracting Algebraic Expressions

1. Keep an Eye on Signs: Pay close attention to the signs (+ or -) before each term, especially when subtracting.

2. Simplify Where Possible: Always look to simplify your expressions by combining like terms, making the expression easier to work with or solve.

Worked Example

Worked Example: Combining Like Terms

Simplify the expression: 4x+7x2x4x + 7x - 2x.

Worked Example

Worked Example: Combining Like and Unlike Terms

Simplify 4x+3y2x+y4x + 3y - 2x + y

Only combine like terms: Look for terms with the same variable and the same exponent.

Keep the variable part the same: When adding or subtracting, don’t change the variable, just adjust the numbers (coefficients).

Watch out for negative signs: Remember to subtract carefully when dealing with negative terms.
