How to Determine the Best Buy

When faced with multiple deals, you can determine the best value by comparing the price per unit.

Steps to Find the Best Deal:

  • Find the price per unit by dividing the total price by the number of items.
  • Compare the price per unit for each deal.
  • Choose the option with the lower unit price, as it offers the best value.

Example 1: Comparing Tin Prices

  • Deal A: 3 tins cost £1.20\pounds 1.20
  • Deal B: 4 tins cost £1.80\pounds 1.80

Step 1: Find price per tin

1.203=0.40per tin\frac{1.20}{3} = 0.40 \text{per tin}

1.804=0.45per tin\frac{1.80}{4} = 0.45 \text{per tin}

Final Answer: Deal A is better because 40p per tin is cheaper than 45p per tin.

Worked Example

A customer is choosing between two shops for buying caps:

Baseball World: 3 caps for £22.50\pounds 22.50

Head Hut: 5 caps for £36.00\pounds 36.00

Always compare the price per unit, not just the total price.

For complex offers, write each step clearly to avoid mistakes.

Look out for special promotions (e.g., "Buy One Get One Free") and factor them into your calculations.

Round answers to two decimal places when dealing with money.
