Cumulative Frequency

What Does “Cumulative” Mean?

“Cumulative” means adding up as you go — like a running total.

]In statistics, cumulative frequency tells us how many data points are less than or equal to a certain value.

It’s super useful when:

  • You want to understand how data builds up over time
  • You’re preparing to draw a cumulative frequency graph
  • You want to find the median, quartiles, or percentiles

How Do I Create a Cumulative Frequency Table?

Let’s say a group of students were timed running a 100m sprint. Their times were grouped into a table like this:

Time (s)Frequency
10t<1210 \leq t \lt 124
12t<1412 \leq t \lt 146
14t<1614 \leq t \lt 169
16t<1816 \leq t \lt 185
18t<2018 \leq t \lt 202

To make a cumulative frequency table, we add a third column:

Time (s)FrequencyCumulative Frequency
10t<1210 \leq t \lt 1244
12t<1412 \leq t \lt 1464 + 6 = 10
14t<1614 \leq t \lt 16910 + 9 = 19
16t<1816 \leq t \lt 18519 + 5 = 24
18t<2018 \leq t \lt 20224 + 2 = 26

Final cumulative frequency = total number of students = 26

Alternative Format

Sometimes, cumulative tables show only the upper boundary of each class:

Time (t < x)Cumulative Frequency
t < 124
t < 1410
t < 1619
t < 1824
t < 2026

From this version, we can subtract to get the individual class frequencies:

  • 10 - 4 = 6 \to frequency of 12t<1412 \leq t \lt 14
  • 19 - 10 = 9 \to frequency of 14t<1614 \leq t \lt 16
  • etc.

Cumulative frequency graphs always use the upper class boundary for the x-axis.

E.g. for 10t<1210 \leq t \lt 12, plot at t=12t = 12.

Cumulative frequency graphs are great for estimating:

  • Median (half of the total)
  • Lower quartile (14\frac{1}{4} of the total)
  • Upper quartile (34\frac{3}{4} of the total)

Always check whether the table gives cumulative frequency or raw frequency — it affects how you work with the numbers.
