Photosynthesis & Chlorophyll
Photosynthesis & Chlorophyll: The Green Magic Behind Plant Life
Plants are like tiny factories turning sunlight into food, and chlorophyll is the superhero making it all possible
What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. It’s how they produce the energy they need to grow and give us the oxygen we breathe
The Word Equation:
Key Ingredients for Photosynthesis:
- Sunlight: Provides energy to power the process.
- Chlorophyll: A green pigment that captures sunlight.
- Carbon Dioxide : From the air, absorbed through the leaves.
- Water : Absorbed by roots from the soil
The Role of Chlorophyll
What is Chlorophyll?
- Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in chloroplasts (tiny structures in plant cells).
- It’s what makes leaves look green!
What Does Chlorophyll Do?
- It absorbs sunlight and converts light energy into chemical energy.
- This energy is used to create glucose (a type of sugar) during photosynthesis
Why is Chlorophyll Important?
- Energy Transfer: It captures sunlight and transfers it into chemical bonds in glucose.
- Plant Growth: Glucose made during photosynthesis is used to grow and repair plant tissues.
- Oxygen Production: As a byproduct, photosynthesis releases oxygen into the air, which we breathe.

Remember the Formula: Use the word equation to help you recall the chemical equation.
Sunlight + Chlorophyll = Magic: Without either, photosynthesis won’t work.
Focus on the Products: Photosynthesis creates glucose (food for plants) and oxygen (for us).
