Paper 1 Overview

  • The Paper 1 exam lasts for 2 hours and consists of three questions, with Questions 1 and 2 broken down into sub-questions.
  • The paper carries a total of 80 marks, which are divided between two key skills: reading and writing.

 

Total marks for reading: 65

Total marks for writing: 15

 

  • In addition to the question paper and answer booklet, you will receive an insert containing the three texts required to answer the exam questions.
  • These texts will all be based on a similar topic.

 

  • CIE recommends spending around 15 minutes reading the texts and approximately 30-35 minutes answering each question.
  • However, as each question has different requirements and is worth a different number of marks, we suggest using the following timings for this exam:

Which Skills Are Assessed

  • This IGCSE focuses on two main assessment objectives, each contributing 50% of your overall grade.

These objectives are further broken down into the following sub-objectives:

 

 

AO1: read and respond in different ways to different types of text

Sub-objective

What this means

R1: demonstrate understanding of explicit meanings

  • Show that you understand the obvious meanings communicated in a text

R2: demonstrate understanding of implicit meanings and attitudes

  • Show that you can identify hints or suggestions in a text to uncover the writer’s underlying meanings and attitudes.

R3: analyse, evaluate and develop facts, ideas and opinions, using appropriate support from the text

  • Analyse and assess the facts, ideas, and opinions in the text, explaining and building on them where necessary. Include supporting evidence, such as quotations or references to the text.

R4: demonstrate understanding of how writers achieve effects and influence readers

  • Show how a writer creates particular effects and influences their audience through the use of language. Consider the writer’s deliberate choices and their purpose.

R5: select and use information for specific purposes

  • Identify and use relevant information from the text to answer questions accurately and effectively.

AO2: write accurately and effectively, using Standard English appropriately

W1: articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and imagined

  • Write clearly and effectively to convey thoughts, feelings, and experiences, whether real or imagined.

W2: organise and structure ideas and opinions for deliberate effect

  • Arrange and connect ideas and opinions logically and purposefully to engage and influence your reader.

W3: use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate to context

  • Choose a variety of suitable vocabulary and sentence structures to achieve specific effects within your writing.

W4: use register appropriate to context

a)     Adjust your tone and style of writing to suit the purpose, audience, and format of the task.

W5: make accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar

  • Ensure your writing is accurate, avoiding mistakes in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
