Converting Between Different Units
Converting Units of Length
Metric length conversions are based on powers of 10.
Common Length Conversions:
- 1 = 10
- 1 = 100
- 1 = 1000
How to Convert Lengths
If converting to a smaller unit, multiply.
If converting to a larger unit, divide.
Example: Convert 54 to
Final Answer: 540 .
Example: Convert 12,300 to
- Convert to : \[12,300 \div 100 = 123 \]
- Convert to : \[ 123 \div 1000 = 0.123 \]
Final Answer: 0.123 .
Converting Units of Mass
Metric mass conversions also follow powers of 10.
Common Mass Conversions:
- 1 = 1000
- 1 = 1000
- 1 = 1000
Example: Convert 485 to
\(485 \div 1000 = 0.485 \(kg\)\)
Final Answer: 0.485 .
Converting Units of Volume/Capacity
Volume and capacity conversions also follow powers of 10.
Common Volume/Capacity Conversions:
- 1 = 100 = 1000
- 1 = 10
- 1 = 1
- 1 = 1000
- 1 = 1000
Example: Convert 750 to
Final Answer: 0.75 .
Example: Convert 1.2 to
Final Answer: 1200 .
Look for a pattern—metric conversions are all based on powers of 10.
Check your final units—ensure the answer is in the required unit.
For multi-step conversions, convert to an intermediate unit first (e.g., ).
Be careful with volume vs. capacity—, but .
