Colonial / Filamentous Forms
Colonial and Filamentous Forms of Living Cells
Introduction
In biology, some organisms exist as colonies or filaments. These forms are crucial for understanding how cells can organize and function together. Let's explore two examples: Spirogyra and Rhizopus.
Colonial Forms
- Colonial organisms are groups of identical cells that live together but function independently.
- Each cell in a colony can perform all necessary life functions.
- Examples include Volvox, where cells are embedded in a gelatinous matrix.
Filamentous Forms
- Filamentous organisms are made of long chains of cells.
- Cells in filaments are often specialized and work together for the organism's survival.
- Examples include Spirogyra, a type of green algae.
Structure of Spirogyra
- Filamentous Algae: Spirogyra consists of cylindrical cells arranged in long chains.
- Chloroplasts: It has spiral chloroplasts that aid in photosynthesis.
- Cell Wall: Each cell has a cellulose cell wall.
Structure of Rhizopus
- Filamentous Fungus: Rhizopus is a type of bread mold with thread-like structures called hyphae.
- Spores: It reproduces asexually through spores formed in sporangia.
- Mycelium: The network of hyphae forms the mycelium, which absorbs nutrients.
Worked Example
Identify the structure and function of Spirogyra and Rhizopus.

Remember: Colonial organisms can survive independently, while filamentous organisms often rely on cell specialization and cooperation.
Visualize: Use diagrams to understand how cells are arranged in colonies and filaments.
