Factors Affecting the Rate of Reaction

Introduction

The rate of a chemical reaction is influenced by several factors. Understanding these factors helps us control reactions in industrial and laboratory settings.

Key factors include:

  • Concentration
  • Temperature
  • Surface Area
  • Catalysts

Concentration

Increasing the concentration of reactants generally increases the rate of reaction. This is because more reactant particles are present, leading to a higher chance of collisions.

Example: In a reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium, increasing the concentration of hydrochloric acid speeds up the reaction.

Temperature

Raising the temperature increases the kinetic energy of particles, causing them to move faster and collide more frequently and with greater energy. This often leads to a faster reaction rate.

Example: Baking a cake at a higher temperature will cook it faster because the reactions involved occur more quickly.

Surface Area

Increasing the surface area of a solid reactant increases the rate of reaction. More surface area allows more particles to be exposed and available for collisions.

Example: Powdered sugar dissolves faster than a sugar cube because it has a larger surface area.

Catalysts

Catalysts speed up reactions without being consumed. They provide an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy.

Example: Enzymes in the human body act as catalysts to speed up biological reactions.

Worked Example

Consider the reaction between hydrogen peroxide and iodide ions:

Without a catalyst, the reaction is slow. Adding manganese dioxide as a catalyst speeds it up significantly.

Tuity Tip: Remember that catalysts are not consumed in the reaction. They can be used repeatedly.

Temperature Control: Be careful with temperature changes as they can also affect the equilibrium of a reaction.
