Understanding Sequence of Tenses
The sequence of tenses refers to the way verbs change form to show the timing of actions or events in relation to one another. It is important for maintaining clarity in writing and speaking.
In English, the sequence of tenses is often used to show the relationship between the time of the main clause and the time of the subordinate clause.
Basic Rules
- Present Tense: If the main clause is in the present tense, the subordinate clause can be in any tense.
- Past Tense: If the main clause is in the past tense, the subordinate clause usually follows with a past tense form.
- Future Tense: If the main clause is in the future tense, the subordinate clause can be in the present or future tense.
Examples
- Present Tense: "She says that she is ready."
- Past Tense: "He said that he was tired."
- Future Tense: "They will announce that the event will be postponed."
