Segmental Phonology: Consonants – Single & Clusters

Understanding Consonants

Consonants are speech sounds that occur when the airflow is obstructed in some way by your mouth, teeth, or lips. They are essential components of spoken language.

Single Consonants

Single consonants are individual sounds produced by a single letter or a combination of letters that represent a single sound. Here are some examples:

  • Plosives: /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/
  • Fricatives: /f/, /v/, /θ/ (as in "think"), /ð/ (as in "this"), /s/, /z/, /ʃ/ (as in "she"), /ʒ/ (as in "measure")
  • Nasals: /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ (as in "sing")
  • Liquids: /l/, /r/
  • Glides: /w/, /j/ (as in "yes")

Consonant Clusters

Consonant clusters are groups of two or more consonants that appear together in a word without any vowels between them. They can occur at the beginning, middle, or end of words.

Examples include:

  • Initial Clusters: "bl" in "blue", "str" in "street"
  • Medial Clusters: "mp" in "camping", "nd" in "understand"
  • Final Clusters: "st" in "fast", "ld" in "cold"

  • Listen to native speakers and repeat after them.
  • Use online resources or language apps to hear the correct pronunciation.
  • Practice with a friend or language partner to get feedback.
