Formulating Algebraic Expressions from Word Statements
Formulating Algebraic Expressions
What Are Algebraic Expressions?
An algebraic expression is a combination of numbers, variables, and arithmetic operations (such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). They are used to represent mathematical relationships and can be simplified or manipulated to solve problems.
For example:
- The expression (a + 3)(c - 4) represents the product of two binomials.
How to Formulate Algebraic Expressions
To create an algebraic expression, follow these steps:
- Identify the Variables: Determine the unknown quantities in the problem and represent them with letters (e.g., x, y, a, b).
- Determine the Operations: Decide which arithmetic operations connect the variables and constants (e.g., addition, subtraction).
- Combine Elements: Write the expression by combining variables, constants, and operations.
Examples
Example 1: Formulate an Expression for the Product of Two Binomials
Problem: Find an expression for (a + 3)(c - 4).
Worked Example
To find the expression, use the distributive property:
Example 2: Formulate an Expression for a Sum and Product
Problem: Write an expression for the sum of twice a number x and the product of x and 5.

Tuity Tip: Use parentheses to clarify operations and avoid mistakes, especially when dealing with multiple terms.
Check Your Work: After formulating an expression, substitute numbers to verify it represents the problem correctly.
