Humidity, Dew Point & Applications

Understanding Humidity

Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor present in the air. It plays a crucial role in weather conditions and human comfort.

Types of Humidity

  • Absolute Humidity: The total mass of water vapor present in a given volume of air. It is expressed in grams per cubic meter (g/m3).
  • Relative Humidity: The ratio of the current absolute humidity to the highest possible absolute humidity (which depends on the current air temperature). It is expressed as a percentage.

Dew Point

The dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with moisture and dew forms. It is a direct measure of atmospheric moisture.

Measuring Dew Point

  • Measured using a dew point hygrometer.
  • When air cools to its dew point, water vapor condenses into liquid water.

Measuring Humidity

Humidity is measured using instruments like the dry-bulb and wet-bulb hygrometer.

Using a Dry-Bulb and Wet-Bulb Hygrometer

  • The dry-bulb measures the air temperature.
  • The wet-bulb measures the temperature after evaporation, which cools the bulb.
  • The difference between the dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures is used to calculate relative humidity.

Applications of Humidity and Dew Point

  • Weather Forecasting: Helps predict fog, dew, and frost.
  • Comfort Levels: High humidity can make temperatures feel hotter, affecting comfort and health.
  • Industrial Processes: Essential in processes like drying, cooling, and preserving materials.

Worked Example

Calculate the relative humidity if the dry-bulb temperature is 30°C and the wet-bulb temperature is 25°C.

Stay Cool: On hot days, high humidity can make it feel even hotter. Drink plenty of water and stay in the shade!

Check the Weather: Knowing the dew point can help you understand how humid it will feel outside.
