Electromagnetic induction (generators, transformers)
Electromagnetic Induction: Generators and Transformers
Understanding Electromagnetic Induction
Electromagnetic induction is the process of generating an electric current by changing the magnetic field. This principle is the foundation for many electrical devices such as generators and transformers.
Key Concepts
- Faraday’s Law: The induced electromotive force (emf) in a closed circuit is equal to the negative rate of change of magnetic flux through the circuit. Mathematically, it is expressed as:
- Lenz’s Law: The direction of the induced current is such that it opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it. This is reflected in the negative sign in Faraday's Law.
Applications
Generators
- AC Generators: Convert mechanical energy into alternating current (AC) electricity. The coil rotates in a magnetic field, inducing an alternating emf.
- DC Generators: Similar to AC generators but include a commutator to produce direct current (DC) electricity.
Transformers
- Step-Up Transformer: Increases voltage from primary to secondary coil.
- Step-Down Transformer: Decreases voltage from primary to secondary coil.
The transformer equation is given by:
Where and are the voltages and and are the number of turns in the secondary and primary coils, respectively.
Worked Example
Calculate the secondary voltage of a transformer with 100 turns in the primary coil and 200 turns in the secondary coil if the primary voltage is 50V.

Remember: The efficiency of a transformer is typically high, but some energy is always lost as heat.
Direction Matters: Lenz’s Law helps determine the direction of induced current, which is crucial in understanding how devices like generators work.
