Exploring Functions
What Are Functions?
A function is like a special machine in maths. You put something in (an input), the machine does some magic (a rule), and you get something out (an output).
For example:
- The function rule might be “multiply by 2 and then add 3.”
- If you put in , the output will be
We often write functions like this:
Here:
- means "the function of ."
- is the input
- is the rule that the function applies.
How to Use :
- Replace with the input value
- Follow the function rule to calculate the output.
Key Properties of Functions
- Domain: The set of all possible input values.
- Range: The set of all possible output values.
Examples
Example 1: when :
- Replace with in the rule :
- Multiply:
- Add:
So, the output is
Example 2: for :
- Set the function equal to :
- Subtract from both sides:
- Divide both sides by :
So, the input gives an output of

Substitute Carefully: Always replace with the given value
Check Your Steps: For solving equations, work backwards to check your answer.
Draw Graphs (Optional): Visualize functions for better understanding, especially quadratic ones.
