Transpiration
Transpiration: How Plants “Sweat” to Stay Cool
What is Transpiration?
Imagine you’re playing outside on a hot day. You start to sweat. Plants do something kind of similar! Transpiration is when a plant loses water as water vapor (like an invisible gas) from tiny holes on its leaves. These tiny holes are called stomata.
In other words:
Transpiration is like a plant “sweating.” Instead of sweaty liquid on the outside, the plant’s leaves let water turn into vapor and drift away into the air.
How Does Transpiration Happen?
- Water Inside the Leaf: The leaves have lots of little spaces inside, filled with water from the plant’s cells.
- Evaporation: When the sun shines or the air is dry, some of this water turns into water vapor (just like how puddles dry up when it’s sunny).
- Escaping Through Stomata: The water vapor sneaks out of the leaf through very tiny holes called stomata (think of them like tiny doorways).
Analogy: If you have a wet sponge and you leave it in the sun, the water in the sponge disappears into the air as it dries. That’s similar to what happens inside a leaf: the water turns into vapor and escapes!
Why Is Transpiration Important?
- Cooling the Leaf: Just like sweating cools you down, transpiration helps keep the plant from overheating.
- Movement of Water: As water leaves the leaf, it gently pulls more water up inside the plant (like sipping through a straw). (We won’t go into how water travels inside because that’s another subtopic, but know that transpiration helps keep water moving.)

Think of transpiration like the plant “breathing out” water vapor. This helps you remember that water goes from inside the leaf to the outside air.
Stomata are like little windows. When they open, water vapor can leave.
Warm, sunny, and breezy weather usually means more transpiration because it’s easier for water to evaporate when it’s hot and dry outside.
