Question 2 Short-Answer Questions: Model Answers
Question 2 consists of two parts: a short-answer task and a language analysis task.
Both tasks are based on Text C from your reading insert and are intended to assess your ability to select and interpret information accurately.
This guide provides an example of how to approach the short-answer questions from the June 2022 exam paper.
Text C (June 2022)
The following extract is Text C from the June 2022 exam paper. It describes a writer’s experience of assisting her husband as he prepared for an endurance athletics event. The passage includes both explicit and implicit details required to answer the questions.
Model Answers for Question 2(a-c)
Question 2(a) is divided into four sub-questions and requires you to identify a word or phrase from the text that conveys the same meaning as the underlined words in the question.
When searching for suitable words or phrases in the text, pay close attention to additional clues provided within the passage.
For example:
Question 2(b) requires you to explain, using your own words, what the writer intends by specific words that are underlined in the text.
To do this, locate and highlight the relevant words in the passage, then provide an explanation of their meaning within the given context. For example:
Question 2(c) will ask you to select one example from the text and explain how the writer communicates something to the reader.
To answer this, first locate the relevant passage within the context of the entire text. In your response, be sure to clearly identify the example you are using, and then make three distinct points about it. Avoid writing lengthy paragraphs when three concise sentences will suffice.

- What you need to do
- What to look for in the text (the focus of the question)
- Take note of the marks allocated to each sub-question and answer accordingly.
- Ensure you find and highlight the relevant words and phrases in the text:
