Understanding Sense Relations
Sense relations help us understand the connections between words in the English language. This includes synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms.
Synonyms
- Definition: Words that have similar meanings.
- Example: "Happy" and "joyful" are synonyms because they both convey a sense of pleasure.
Antonyms
- Definition: Words that have opposite meanings.
- Example: "Hot" and "cold" are antonyms because they describe opposite temperatures.
Homonyms
- Definition: Words that sound the same or are spelled the same but have different meanings.
- Example: "Bat" (an animal) and "bat" (used in sports) are homonyms.
