Essay Writing: Formal and Informal Letters

Understanding Letters

Letters are a form of written communication. They can be formal or informal, depending on the purpose and the audience.

In the WAEC English Language exam, you may be asked to write either type of letter.

Formal Letters

Formal letters are used for official or professional communication. They follow a specific format and are often addressed to people in authority or business contacts.

  • Address: Your address is written at the top right corner, followed by the date.
  • Recipient's Address: The recipient's address is written on the left, below your address.
  • Salutation: Use "Dear Sir/Madam" if you don't know the recipient's name.
  • Subject: A brief line stating the purpose of the letter.
  • Body: Clearly state your purpose in a well-organized manner. Use paragraphs to separate ideas.
  • Closing: Use "Yours faithfully" if you don't know the recipient's name, followed by your signature and printed name.

Example: Formal Letter

Purpose: Requesting permission for a school trip.

[Your Address]
[Date]

The Principal,
XYZ High School,
123 School Lane,
Lagos.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Subject: Request for Permission to Organize a School Trip

Yours faithfully,
[Your Signature]
[Your Name]

Informal Letters

Informal letters are written to friends, family, or acquaintances. They have a more relaxed tone and structure.

  • Address: Your address is written at the top right corner, followed by the date.
  • Salutation: Use the recipient's first name, e.g., "Dear John,".
  • Body: Write in a friendly, conversational style. Use paragraphs to separate ideas.
  • Closing: Use a friendly closing, such as "Best wishes," "Yours truly," followed by your name.

Example: Informal Letter

Purpose: Inviting a friend to a birthday party.

[Your Address]
[Date]

Dear Jane,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to invite you to my birthday party on the 15th of March...

Best wishes,
